Klukwan Clinic Dedication Ceremony
Following a week of SEARHC Board meetings in the Chilkat Valley, SEARHC Board members, local SEARHC Staff and executive management from Sitka and Juneau were on hand to witness the dedication of the new health clinic in Klukwan. Mayor Mike Case from Haines, and Skagway Tribal President Lance Twitchell were also present to help Klukwan residents to celebrate the occasion.
The completion of the ground floor clinic has been a goal for the community since January of 2002 when village leaders met over a 3-day period to put together a strategic plan for the village. The clinic was identified as a community priority because of the accessibility problems associated with the second floor of the ANS Hall. SEARHC received grants from the Denali Commission and the Rasmussen Foundation to renovate and complete the building formerly owned by Chief and Josie Johnson.
When SEARHC grant writers asked what Klukwan could contribute toward the clinic building the Wellness Sewing group came forward to donate their time and skills to create a button blanket for the clinic. The "Tree of Life/Balm of Gilead" button blanket was presented to SEARHC as part of the ceremonies. It will hang in the waiting area of the clinic upon completion of the glass case being created for it.
Evelyn Hotch, long time SEARHC Board member and former Health-Aid from Klukwan was given the honor of cutting the ribbon and the Klukwan Chilkat Dancers helped everyone get in a celebratory mood as they sang and danced a few traditional songs including an invitational song that called out people from each community in Southeast represented at the gathering. The dancers also serenaded the crowd as they danced through the doors of the new building. The Sisterhood, who had catered meals throughout the week, also hosted a luncheon for the crowd at the ANS Hall.
Following all the festivities many of the guests expressed their appreciation to Klukwan for the hospitality shown here. Ethel Lund, former SEARHC President, also made these encouraging remarks regarding her impressions of Klukwan. "There is such a positive attitude here. You all are can-do people here, and that's nice to be around. I always hate to leave here."

Klukwan Veterans' Memorial
The monument at the Klukwan Veterans' Memorial was begun by the efforts of local Vietnam Veteran Donald Hotch Sr. in the late 1990's. Don, known locally as Bosh, had a local contractor create a cement monument that would hold a plaque with all the names of the local veterans, both living and deceased. The monument was made complete with an American Flag flying overhead. The monument, as originally created, sat in an open field where the Klukwan Post Office turned school building had been located before it had burned to the ground in the late 1980's. The monument got a face lift when the community received a small grant from the Alaska Department of Veterans and Military Affairs in 2002. Since then the community has been building up the area in an effort to honor the war veterans and to beautify the community. Fund raisers, donations, volunteer labor, and contributions from the local tribal government have all helped to make the Klukwan Veterans' Memorial what it is today.

I have attached a series of photos from the beginning to the end of the first Klukwan Wiseguys potato patch 2009. The idea was to provide a sustainable subsistence based crop that could supply every house in Klukwan with potatoes every year. This would also allow us to get together with the community kids, exercise and spent time together doing something for our community.
We started with a donated piece of land from the Chilkat Indian Village and began clearing and clean up. We were funded by the Wisewoman program to purchase the potato seed and fertilizer and the Behavior Health prevention program to buy a few hand tools. Sixty hours was spent in clearing and ground preparations as well as 20 hours of donated heavy equipment time from Chilkat Indian village and Hank Jacquot. This got us to a useable piece of ground 100' x 100'. The preparations for planting then began. Many of us spent several days with three roto tillers tilling the area, digging furrows for planting, adding organic fertilizers and ultimately planting 1000 potato plants. Four varieties were planted, Kennebec, Tlingit, Yukon Gold and Chippawa's.
The summer was unseasonably hot and we had a minimal water supply from a near by creek, to supplement the creek, the watering was done by utilizing the village fire truck to spray the patch with 750 gallons of water every three to five days. We harvested the potatoes on Sept. 25th and had many community members participate as well as all the kids from the Klukwan school and their teachers. We grossed approx.1500 pounds of potatoes. Every child and teacher was sent home with a large bag of potatoes and every house hold in Klukwan was given potatoes. Due to the prolonged unseasonable hot weather all summer the final harvest amount was a bit lower then we'd hoped but everyone was given potatoes and we all had a great time harvesting.
To end on a positive note in August we applied for a small grant through Rural Cap to purchase supplies and equipment and have recently found out we were awarded the grant. Thanks goes to everyone and department for all your support, we look forward to another great year in 2010!
Thank you,
Klukwan Wiseguys.
